The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) is a hormonal system that regulates blood pressure, fluid, and electrolyte balance. It begins with the release of renin by the kidneys in response to low blood pressure or reduced blood flow. Renin converts angiotensinogen, produced by the liver, into angiotensin I.

This is further converted into angiotensin II by an enzyme called ACE in the lungs. Angiotensin II constricts blood vessels, increasing blood pressure, and stimulates the release of aldosterone from the adrenal glands. Aldosterone promotes sodium and water retention in the kidneys, raising blood volume and pressure. RAAS plays a critical role in maintaining cardiovascular health.
