Blood clotting, or coagulation, is the body’s natural process to prevent excessive bleeding when a blood vessel is injured. It begins with vasoconstriction, where the blood vessel narrows to reduce blood flow.

Next, platelets rush to the site of injury and stick together, forming a temporary “plug.” Meanwhile, clotting factors in the blood are activated in a complex chain reaction, converting the protein fibrinogen into fibrin. Fibrin forms a mesh that stabilizes the platelet plug and creates a more permanent clot. Once the vessel is healed, the body gradually breaks down the clot, restoring normal blood flow.
